The Department of Arabic Language and Literature has been functioning at the Institute of Asian and African Studies, which is the part of Moscow State University, from the very first day of the foundation of this institute. Being one of the leading departments by the number of students enrolled, it offers bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees in Arabic studies (with specialisations in Arabic language and literature or Islamic religion and culture). It also provides teaching for two-subject degrees: Arabic with Hebrew, Hebrew with Arabic, Classical Arabic and Religious Studies, Classical Hebrew and Religious Studies, and administers the interdepartmental bachelor of arts degrees in two-subject programs: Arabic and Economics, Arabic and History, Arabic and Philology, Arabic and Politics, Arabic and Religious Studies, Hebrew and Economics, Hebrew and History, Hebrew and Philology, Hebrew and Politics, Hebrew and Religious Studies. The study of Islamic culture and of Medieval Arabic philology, as well as of the Middle Eastern Philosophical and Religious thought lie within the range of the Department’s scientific interests.

on of the structure of the Arabic language, the study of its history, and questions of the genesis and typology of the Arab linguistic tradition. The founder and the leader of the Department’s scientific school is its head Prof. H.M.Gabuchian. His monograph "The Theory of the Article and Problems of Arabic Syntax" (Moscow, 1972) enjoyed wide spread interest in our country and abroad; the main syntactical constructions are thoroughly modelled here on the basis of modern scientific methods. The Arabic translation of this book was published by the Syrian Ministry of Higher Education in 1984. During the last years Prof. H.M.Gabuchian published a series of new scientific researches on the theory of Arabic language. He advanced, in particular, an original theory of "harf" as a minimal segment of Arabic word, interpreted in relation to quantity as "mora" (= short syllable). Such an interpretation of "harf" is served by Prof. H.M.Gabuchian as a basis for the study of rhythmic word structure in Arabic, a theory, which is of no small importance not only for the theory of Arabic language, but also for the practical teaching of Arabic orthoepy.

Arabic lexicological researches, including lexicographical, are carried out at the Department by Prof. V.M.Belkin. A special course of lectures is for the first time prepared by him on the history of Arabic language; a successful attempt is made here to give a systematic notion about the development of the Arabic language on the basis of a detailed analysis of texts characterising different periods of language development. Department members - Prof. H.M.Gabuchian and dr. V.V.Lebedev took part in the edition of "Linguistic Encyclopaedic Dictionary" (Moscow, 1990). Dr. V.V.Lebedev’s monograph "Negation in Arabic Language" (Moscow, 1989) together with his several text-books are widely used in language teaching and training. Questions of Arabic syntax, in particular, the classification of predicative structures in Arabic grammar are examined in dr. V.M.Pack’s publications. He has also prepared an interesting text-book for the study of the language of modern Arab periodicals.
The monograph "The Classical Arabic Verse: History and Theory of "Arud" (Moscow, 1991) by Prof. Dmitry Frolov opened new perspectives in the study of the Arabic Philological science and the history of Arabic poetry. Professor Frolov’s interests also include the problem of the relations between Hellenistic, Arabic and Jewish traditions of thought, as well as Qur’anic studies, including the history of Muslim exegetics.
History of Medieval Arabic literature is taught by Prof. D.V.Frolov and Prof. A.B. Kudelin. The last is at the same time Vice Director of the Institute of World Literature at the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is the author of monographs on Andalusian poetry and Medieval Arabic Poetics, containing novel ideas about the character of the Arabic poetical canon and its role in the history of Medieval Arabic poetry.
A course in the history of Modern and Contemporary Arabic literature was recently revised thanks to the cooperation of the Department with Prof. V.N. Kirpithcenko who is a leading scholar at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a major specialist in the history of Egyptian literature of the 20th century.
